Privacy Policy

The short version. You can use Pocket French without giving a name, an email or any other identifying detail. Nothing you search, type, copy, translate or say into the microphone is ever sent to us. We do not sell your data, we do not share it with advertisers, and there is no advertising or tracking SDK in the app.
What we collect
Account
When you first open the app an anonymous account is created automatically. It is a random identifier and requires no name or email. Signing in is optional: if you choose Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google, we receive the name and email address those services release to us. Apple's private relay address works normally here.
Learning data
Your saved items, review schedules, lesson progress, answer outcomes and paused practice sessions are stored on your device. If you have Pro and sign in, they also sync to our servers. Answer outcomes contain content identifiers, timestamps and scores, not audio, transcripts or text you type. Guest learning data stays on your device.
Product analytics
Limited product events, such as a screen opening, a completed practice session or a purchase screen being shown. Events carry randomized installation, session and account identifiers and can be associated with the current account. They do not include learner-entered text.
Device context
Basic technical details such as your language, region, platform and app version, recorded once per session so we know which devices to keep supporting.
What we never collect
Pocket French does not send the following to our servers or include them in analytics. Operating-system speech services handle audio under their own privacy terms:
- Text you type into search, copy, or share.
- Anything you enter into, or receive from, the translation screen.
- Microphone audio and speech transcripts. Speech recognition is handled by the operating system for the interaction you asked for; Pocket French does not store or transmit it.
- Contacts, photos, location, health data, or your advertising identifier.
Purchases
Pocket French offers an optional paid upgrade as an in-app purchase. Payment is processed by Apple.
- We never see your payment details. Card numbers, billing addresses and Apple Account credentials go to Apple and are never available to this app or to us.
- We use a purchase-validation provider to confirm whether an upgrade is valid and still active. It receives an anonymous purchase identifier and the transaction metadata Apple supplies — which product, when, and whether it has expired or been refunded. If you sign in, your account identifier is linked to this purchase-validation record.
- We record that a purchase succeeded or failed so we can tell whether the flow is broken. No price, receipt or payment data is included.
How we use it
- To run the app and keep your learning progress correct.
- To unlock what you have paid for, on every device where you are signed in.
- To understand which parts of the app get used, so we know what to improve.
- To find and fix crashes and defects.
We do not profile you, build advertising audiences, or make automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects.
Who else is involved
We rely on a small number of service providers acting on our instructions: cloud hosting and authentication, Apple for payments and optional sign-in, a purchase-validation provider, an app delivery and update service, and website hosting. Data is processed on cloud infrastructure in the United States, so using the app involves a transfer there. None of these providers is permitted to sell your data or use it for their own advertising.
Security
Traffic between the app and our servers uses HTTPS. Access controls mean an account can only reach its own data. Sign-in sessions are persisted in the app's platform-managed application storage. The reference library is bundled for offline reading; sign-in, purchases, analytics and cloud sync use network requests.
Retention
- Randomized guest-account and analytics records may be retained for service operation and product measurement. They can become associated with your account if you later sign in.
- Signed-in account data is kept until you delete your account.
- Product events and aggregate analytics are retained for product decisions.
- Purchase records follow Apple's retention rules for tax, accounting and refunds.
Your choices and rights
- Stay anonymous. The app works fully without signing in.
- Access and portability. Ask and we will send you the data held for your account.
- Correction and erasure. Delete your account in the app, or write to us.
- Objection. Ask and we will exclude your installation from analytics entirely.
Depending on where you live — for example in the EEA, the UK or California — you may have further statutory rights. We honour them wherever you are.
Deleting your data
- In the app: Profile → Delete Account. This removes the account and its synced learning data immediately.
- By email: pocketfrench@susnoodle.com, subject “Account Deletion Request”.
Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription — Apple owns that relationship. Cancel in Settings → Apple Account → Subscriptions. A guest account has no provided name or email, so we may be unable to locate it after uninstalling unless you kept its diagnostic identifier.
Children
Pocket French is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. The app can be used entirely anonymously. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will remove it.
Changes
We may update this policy. The date above always reflects the current version, and material changes are called out in the app's release notes.
